A Lesson in Anchor Text

So I found this blog on cell phone tips by Mike M. where he reviews all kinds of cool gadgets, does reviews on tools and has a really great looking blog.

The blog looks really nice; the articles are clear & well thought out. It appears that he cares a lot and spends a significant amount of time on it. So how could it be even better?

Let's start with a simple thing call anchor text relevancy. When Mike writes a blurb on a product, phone, gadget, or the latest tool, he typically links to the providers web site so his readers can easily find out about the product or service he is talking about.

But how the Search Engines see this link is they key. The words he uses to link back to that providers web site must be relevant to the topic of discussion for the link to be considered valuable.

Case in point:  In the image above is a new tool he discussed about identifying phone numbers. The link "anchor text" Mike used to refer people to the web site is the web site name, which is not relevant to the topic of his blog.

If Mike wants the search engines to visit his web site more often and have the links he uses be more relevant to the topic of the blog, he needs to change the linking strategy.

The first thing any blogger should do when reviewing a product or tool and wants to refer people to that tool is to look at the Title Tag of the web page you plan to link back to. The Title Tag gives you a good clue as to what the owner of the web site thinks is the most relevant term.

So how can we make the article better for the users, the search engines, and the web site.. Keep these tips in mind..

1. When you create a hyperlink like the ones in the article above, the link is called "anchor text", "anchor tag" or "in anchor text".  They all mean the same thing but are very important to the search engines.

2. If you are linking to searchbug, having the "anchor text" be the name searchbug doesn't really help them since when you type searchbug in Google they already come up first for that term.

3. Placing the link on more relevant key words is much more helpful.

With that in mind, this would be more beneficial.

The line that says:  "Well, lately I have come across a great tool in finding phone number information called SearchBug" should be change to something like: "Well, lately I have come across a great tool that can identify phone numbers from a company called SearchBug."

And the closing line that says: "Tell me what you think about SearchBug in the comments below!" should be changed to "Tell me what you think about SearchBug's identify phone number tool in the comments below!"

As you can see the anchor text moves from the company name to the important relevant text, which makes the link not only more useful but more relevant which is what Google and other Search Engine bots look for. If you do this for all your articles and make sure you do that when posting back links to your site from your social media sites, you will see a huge difference in how often Google visits your site and how many more links you will get indexed.

Cox increases Digital Phone Service

Last week I got a notice from Cox Communication stating that they were raising our phone service yet again. With all the competition and all the users you would think that costs would go down.

In shopping around I found Ring Central which you can use with any internet service provider and use your existing phones. A simple phone adapter plugs in to your network and you plug in your phones. They have excellent customer service to help if needed.

The best part is I get a toll free number, a fax number and a local number for 1/2 of what I was paying before.   Plus my faxes are now sent digitally in PDF form to my email. I'm saving paper and can view faxes on the go.

If you're looking for a few phone service, give Ring Central a Try.

Disclaimer:  Obviously I love their service or I would not promote it, however full disclosure requires I let you know that Ring Central does compensate me for referrals as they will compensate you as well. They offer various gifts or gift cards for each referral. So do me a favor and do yourself a favor and check it out.
